The global HR team is undergoing significant transformation to position it more effectively to support the rapidly changing needs of the British Council. The role of Head Talent and Development is part of the SSA centre of expertise and reports to the Regional HR Director. The post holder will define the Talent Strategy across Sub Saharan Africa (SSA) and implement best practices in Talent Management which will have a direct impact on the growth and sustainability of our business. The successful post holder will be based in any country in Sub Saharan Africa (SSA).Regional Head Talent and Development - Sub Saharan Africa (SSA) at British Council

Job Title: Regional Head Talent and Development - Sub Saharan Africa (SSA)

Our operations in Sub-Saharan Africa currently spans across 20 countries including Nigeria, Ghana, Sierra Leone, Cameroon, Senegal, Kenya, Tanzania, Rwanda, Uganda, South Africa, Namibia, Mauritius, Mozambique, Sudan, Ethiopia, South Sudan, Zimbabwe, Zambia, Malawi and Botswana.

The Organisation

The British Council is the UK’s international organisation for cultural relations and educational opportunities. We create friendly knowledge and understanding between the people of the UK and other countries. We do this by making a positive contribution to the UK and the countries we work with – changing lives by creating opportunities, building connections and engendering trust.

Context and environment

The SSA Business Plan sets out ambitious growth targets for both the number of people we will work with and the income that we will generate. Turnover by 2020 is expected to be over to £90 million in SSA, driven predominately by growth in Contract income as well as Exams and Teaching centres, despite a declining grant funding from centre. We also expect to be more profitable, reinforcing financial sustainability.
The organisation will achieve this by becoming increasingly efficient and commercial in its approach whilst maintaining its public service ethos and charitable purpose. This will be done through the implementation of a number of change programmes, which will result in more efficient and simpler processes.
  The Role Requirements
Leadership, influencing and strategy
  • Work closely with other CoE leaders to contribute to HR strategy and to implement and deliver Talent services  ensuring global consistency and regional alignment 
  • Be a visible role model for the British Council’s values and behaviours.
Talent Management
  • Lead on the development and deployment of identified talent across the region
  • Ensure Talent Management policies and practices meet British Council Equality, Diversity and Inclusion standards.
Performance Management
  • Develop capability or HR teams in the understanding and application of Performance Management policies to ensure consistency and manage risk.
  • Work with Centre of Expertise to develop and implement a performance management system that encourages and recognises good performance and creates measures that effectively address poor performance
